The Pope is asking everyone, not just the missionaries, to get to work. In a message released this week, Pope Leo XIV renewed his appeal for World Mission Sunday, calling the faithful to see evangelization for what it really is: a work of love that belongs to the whole family.
“Our Lord calls us to cooperate as one family,” the Pope said in the caption accompanying his latest @pontifex reel, “with the help of the Holy Spirit, to bring everyone everywhere into a communion of faith in Christ.” The video shows him speaking straight to the camera, intimate and unhurried, with a warm classical painting behind him.
The message is personal and practical at once. The Pope asks every Catholic to commit to the mission “according to our own vocation and the gifts we have received.” That means your prayers count, your giving counts, and so does the simple act of living the Gospel where you are. “Your prayers and practical support will be a great help in bringing the Gospel of God’s love to everyone,” he said, “especially the poorest and those most in need.”
The Poorest Come First
That last line is the heartbeat of the appeal. The Pope keeps putting the poorest and most in need at the center of the mission, and it is a theme he returns to constantly. When he asked the faithful to turn their hearts toward the vulnerable, he was naming the same people: the ones with the least, and the ones the world overlooks.
It fits with a pattern we have watched all week. In Luxembourg, the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess just shone a light on the fight against poverty, lending their voices to the same cause the Pope names as the mission’s first priority. Different people, different countries, same direction.
A Mission for Everyone
World Mission Sunday has always been about the faraway corners of the map, but the Pope’s message reframes it. The mission is not a trip someone else takes. It is what happens when an ordinary believer decides to cooperate, as he put it, as one family. One family means no one gets to sit it out.
Days earlier, the Pope opened the academic year at Rome’s Pontifical Universities by describing education as a vocation, a way of responding to God and to humanity. It is the same invitation wearing different clothes: give what you have, where you are, and trust that love does the rest.
The appeal is out there now, and the Pope is not asking for grand gestures. Pray, give, and keep the poorest in your heart. That, he says, is the great mission of evangelization, and it starts with you.
