From Frederik IV to Frederik X: that is the distance Fredensborg Palace Church covered on Wednesday night, as Denmark’s royal family celebrated the baroque church’s 300th anniversary with a jubilee concert.
King Frederik X and Queen Mary arrived to a warm welcome, processing down the church’s central aisle — the Queen in a black top and flowing pleated gold skirt, carrying a big bouquet of pink and cream flowers. Queen Margrethe and Princess Benedikte completed the royal party.
The music told the church’s story in sound. Concerto Copenhagen’s period-instrument players and the Fredensborg Palace Church Girls’ Choir performed works from the era of the church’s creation, then premiered a newly composed piece inspired by a text from the original 1726 inauguration — old words given new voice.
That first inauguration took place on October 11, Frederik IV’s birthday. It is the kind of historical rhyme Denmark does well: the king who built the church, and the king celebrating its tercentenary, linked by a name, a date, and an evening of music.
Three hundred years on, the pews were full, the candles were lit, and the family was all there. Some traditions do not need reinventing — they just need keeping.
